Do you have any safety tips for your children?

I was thinking that this would be a good forum to share safety tips on raising your children. I have a few toddlers in the house and was hoping that I could learn some more baby and toddler safety tips. You can never know too many.

Something that I did with my kids was always carry them across the street. This way they were always very aware of the street and never run into it.

Keep matches and lighters out of reach. Keep everything dangerous up high as well so they cant get to it.

Remove all small magnets from the refrigerator; small items can easily be lodged in a toddler’s throat. A lot of people dont think about their magnets on the fridge. I think they look tacky anyways

Here is a tip I was told when I became a mother. This one is for the bedroom crib. Make sure the crib has no areas with gaps more than 2 inches so the child's head cannot get stuck

Here is another tip for the bedroom. If possible, don’t place the crib near or under a window. If the crib is placed near the window, ensure that all windows are securely latched or use a window guard. A toddler can climb out of the crib, and through the window

Never leave your toddler in the bathtub alone, even for a short time. Toddlers can drown in as little as two inches of water. Sadly I have a story about a mother that didnt follow this advice and now suffers for it everyday. Sad story that hits a little too close to home.

Here are a couple of things that I did. I placed a lock on all the toilets. I locked up cabinets containing perfumes, make-up, and other similar bathroom items. Perfume in the wrong small hands can be very dangerous.

This one is simple - Use the back burners on the stove and turn all pot handles towards the back of the stove. You probably already knew that one but I thought it was important enough to reiterate.

Lock all cabinets and drawers containing glass, knives, scissors, and other small objects- You can get all the child proofing locks at stores like Canadian Tire. There are also a lot of stores that specialize in this so when you go there they will probably offer a lot of safety tips that you never thought of.

I never had to use this but a teacher wanted every parent to have a safety word that only you and your child would know if you ever are going to have someone they dont know pick them up. Apparently if children get abducted from elementary school they are told that there parents wanted them to be picked up by the stranger that kidnaps them. If you have a secret word then your child can ask the stranger what the secret word is and if he doesnt know then your child will know he is lying.
